Ohio Cannabis Businesses Can Accept Electronic Payments with Wampei

Jul 24, 2018. | By: Staff

Ohio was the 26th state to legalize medical marijuana, now the nascent industry and legislators are fretting over how to handle payments.

State officials have proposed a “closed-loop” payment processing system similar to pre-paid debit or gift cards.

The system would require that MMJ patients and registered caregivers put money into special accounts, using checks, credit cards or cash at state-licensed liquor stores, or a state agency. It also requires the cannabis companies have bank accounts, which in most cases is not an option. Similar proposals in Hawaii have failed because the dispensaries found the only banking options available to them were too costly to allow the business to be profitable.

If the Ohio Department of Commerce moves forward with the plan, it may cause the state to potentially impose added fees and expenses to licensed medicinal businesses and possibly register patients and caregivers.

Wampei Register© - software that allows any company whether banked or not, to accept Bitcoin payments. By leveraging Bitcoin, individuals can purchase Bitcoin from an ATM, another person or an Exchange such as Uphold or Coinbase. Payments are made directly from the customer to the merchant at a fraction of the cost of other commonly used electronic payment methods (Credit Card, Debit Card or Closed-loop payment system.)

Russell Castagnaro, CEO of Wampei explains, “Ohio has passed legislation that recognizes blockchain technology as legitimate. Now the state’s cannabis businesses can accept Bitcoin payments, they will not have to use armed guards, armored vans, and duffle bags full of cash to move money. The system can be implemented without any additional fees or programs at the state level.”

Cannabis businesses have electronic payment option with Wampei

Jul 24, 2018. | By: Russell

San Jose - We hear confusing messages relating to cannabis frequently. Attorney General Jeff Sessions wants to recriminalize cannabis and Canada is legalizing cannabis There is an answer, and it is Bitcoin payments with Wampei Register©.

It is not just the cannabis companies that are confused, so are the banks and financial institutions that the US federal government regulates. One thing is clear, we cannot count on innovative credit unions (and there are a few) to get the industry out of this dearth of financial services.

This week representatives from the cannabis industry will meet at the NCIA Cannabis Business Summit 2018 One of the new options available to the industry is Bitcoin payments.

Some of the advantages of Bitcoin payments over other alternative payments are: More than 8% of the adult population already owns Bitcoin; Bitcoin is readily available from over 3,400 Bitcoin ATMs or 30 Internet-based exchanges; Payments are far less expensive than credit card transactions; There are no charge-backs or returned payments; No payment information is shared, so fraud risks are vastly reduced.

Even when a cannabis business gets banking from a forward-looking state credit union like Partner, Numerica Credit Union or MAPS, they still cannot accept credit card or electronic checks. Instead, the vast majority hire armed guards to move money from the store to the Credit Union in armored vans if they are lucky enough to pay 10 times the national average in banking fees for the right to store cash and write checks.

Cannabis Payments

Now, these un- and under-banked businesses have an electronic payment option which can decrease the amount of cash they have to handle. Enter Wampei Register© - electronic payments handled just like cash.

At Wampei, we believe that electronic payments should be available to anyone doing business.  We help our customers accept electronic with or without the use of a local bank.

The cannabis industry in the US and Canada are unfairly subjugated to, at best, nearly usurious fees for electronic payment capabilities and at worst a complete reliance on cash. Wampei’s software Wampei Register© allows them to accept payments directly. They can do it without a bank or other third party. Wampei Register© is like a cash register for Bitcoin. Merchants money is always under their control. Funds are available the same day and are not subject to any third party’s policies.

A demonstraion of Wampei Register© is available online.

Wallet Choices - Before a Bitcoin Talk

Jun 11, 2018. | By: Russell

I Love Talking about Cryptocommerce

As the CEO of Wampei, I speak about Wampei frequently, but even more often about cryptocommerce in general. One of the most important things I start out with is showing everyone how easy it is to complete a Bitcoin payment.

Setting Up a Wallet

I am a believer in having a non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet – a software wallet that allows you to own your keys and set the priority of each payment. If you don’t own your keys, you don’t own your crypto. Using exchange hosted wallets like BTC.com, Coinbase, and other doesn’t let you set your payment priority either, so the fees associated with an exchange-based wallet can cost as much as 50 times more than a noncustodial wallet.

I typically recommend an Open Source wallet. Copay are Bitpay are favorite software wallets of mine, but recently Copay started requiring users to set up a backup password phrase. It is smart to backup your wallet. Its also important to show people how easy using Bitcoin is.

My Position - A wallet that has less than $5.00 should not require a back-up.

Download and Install A Wallet to Your Phone

Brd Wallet The BRD wallet - pronounced like bread. Is a quick download, gives you four useable wallets right away, has an intelligent mining fee policy and does not force you to generate a backup (paper wallet) before you use it. BRD is my currentn favorite wallet.

Copay Wallet Integrates seamlessly with Coinbase, Guildera, and ShapeShift

Bitpay Wallet Copay plus integration with Bitpay’s Visa Debit Card

Airbitz/ Edge Wallet Lots of people like this wallet. It is easy to use and includes a directory to find locations to spend or buy crypto. Unfortunately for me, I send about 100 people $.50 in bitcoin every week and many of those times this wallet seems to consider that ‘dust.’ So it does not let me send the funds. It may work for you and the directory is cool.

Why I Wrote this Post

Up until the latest Copay release, a newbie could be up and running with a wallet in one minute (over cell data, not wifi). Now it takes three minutes and the individual has to write down the phrase someplace safe (right - in a bar, that’s a napkin.) It may not seem like it, but in 30 minutes I used to be able to send 30 people their first Bitcoin. Now it’s 10 people (sad face).

BRD changed all that! Now I can get BTC to 30 people again. Thank you BRD wallet.

If you are coming to one of my talks and would like some Bitcoin for your first transaction, please install a non-custodial wallet ahead of time. If you approach me early, I might give you a little extra so you can share.

Built on Blockchain: New Denver Blockchain Community Talks

Mar 22, 2018. | By: Russell

Blockchain is an amazing and often over-hyped technology

That is why Innovation Pavillion and Tata have collaborated to start a community that considers the long term changes possible as a result of this technology. Below is the complete video from the event.

Intro to Blockchain

Russell was able to give an introduction to Blockchain for people who are interested in knowing more than Bitcoin and investment schemes. Of the 30 or so people that were there, only 8 held Bicoin.

We set up five different people with non-custodial wallet and gave them about $0.50 in Bitcoin to get them started. The slides are below.

Freedom from Merchant Accounts and Third Parties

Mar 10, 2018. | By: Russell

Your company does not need a merchant account.

You need software that allows you to accept payments without a third party. Why? Because the old way makes as much sense as using sealing wax to send an email.

Seal Impression, Coat of Arms MET sf1981-534-7s1

Processors solved a real need

Third parties like acquiring banks, issuing banks, and credit card processors serve an essential purpose in the world’s economy. They allow eCommerce to happen. Until recently, one party could not pay another without a third party. To a great extent, the only reason electronic payments are available is because these companies stepped up, created the necessary networks and delivered.

Diners Club

Frank McNamara was embarrassed when he left his wallet at home before a business dinner. After his wife saved him by bringing his checkbook, he swore never to be embarrassed again. His mistake resulted in the creation of credit card industry as we know it today. Diner’s Club provided the framework for newer payment systems like Master Charge, Visa, American Express, Visa Debit, Venmo, and Paypal.

These processors do a number of things:

  • Provide a trust framework that gives the seller confidence that she will be paid and buyer confidence the convenience of not needing to carry cash.
  • Extend credit to consumers who want to buy goods and services.
  • Offer recourse for dissatisfied customers or fraudulent transactions.
  • Enforce state and federal government regulations on sellers.
  • Store payment and personal information on every payment they process.
  • Charge a significant fee for their services to merchants(typically between 2% and 5% for low-risk customers.) Merchants are not allowed to pass these fees on to customers, in actuality - they may not even know how much they have to pay for each charge.
  • Take custody of funds and disburse or claw-back (‘chargeback’) funds according to their policies.
  • Run networks that are notoriously susceptible to fraud. In 2017, there was over $9B in fraud in the US.
  • Recent technology upgrades have not helped much.

Welcome to eCommerce in the 21st century.

You could argue that it arrived a little late, but now a fair and just eCommerce option has arrived, and it is ready for your business.

When using Wampei Register©, there are no processors or other third parties unless you want one. Your funds are always yours. This means:

  • No transactions require trust because payments are sent from the buyer to the seller.
  • No personal information is shared.
  • No reserve requirements.
  • No risk of charge-backs.
  • No fraudulent payment risk.
  • No stored payment information.
  • No high fees.
  • Same-day access to funds.

You may find yourself wondering if this is, in fact, possible, how will you run your business:

  • How will my funds be processed?

Wampei Register© allows you to leverage the Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash public networks to receive funds from your customers directly. There is no need for a Merchant because there is no need to have a third-party vouch for the payment. It comes directly to you - the merchant - in a wallet that you have complete control over.

  • What about fraud?

All Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash payments get pushed from the customer to the merchant. No personal data or information exchange happens. Only the funds are sent directly to your unique address.

  • How will my business get our money?

Your business has significantly more options than a typical credit card merchant setup since you hold the funds when you receive payment. One of the most popular methods is to send the funds to a cryptocurrency exchange which will convert it to fiat currency (USD or Euro) and send them to your bank (ACH or Wire). We can discuss your options given your situation and risk-profile, but what your company chooses to do with your its money is up to you, not dictated by Wampei.

  • No chargebacks?

When you collect payments with Wampei products, your business has no chargeback risk. That is because all payments are sent directly from your customer to your wallet within Wampei Register©. There is no third-party involved.

  • How will I issue refunds?

That’s a great question. How do you handle cash or check refunds? In both cases, you have received the funds already. You can pay refunds by cash, check or send a Bitcoin payment to their address. You handle the refund directly with the customer, not via a third party.

  • What about taxes?

Handle the taxes you pay for receiving cryptocurrency payments for products and services the same way you handle taxes for any other payment method. The only difference is that if you hold the cryptocurrency for a time, you may have to pay capital gains on the difference in the value it had when you received it. Potential capital gains is another reason why some customers choose to convert to fiat immediately. However, if you accept Bitcoin to hold it and profit from increases in its value, you will need to pay capital gains at some time.

  • Bitcoin transactions take too long to be useful, right?

Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash transactions are much faster than almost any other form of payment. Consider that a credit card transaction issues an authorization, which is a commitment from the credit card company that this charge will probably go through. The funds arrive anywhere from 1 to 30 banking days later, depending on your merchant services provider and any reserve requirement you have. Bitcoin transactions are trackable on the blockchain in seconds. Wampei Register© gives each payment a unique payment address for easy tracking, reconciliation and support.

View our Point of Sale demo to see just how quick the process is in the real world. Demo

Wampei does not hold your funds. You chose what happens to your funds and when.

  • Hold the funds in a long-term paper-, hardware- or device-wallet.

  • Send the funds to your cryptocurrency exchange to convert it to fiat currency (USD or Euro) and have it sent electronically to your bank.

  • Convert the funds to another cryptocurrency like Tether that can eliminate price volatility risks.

  • Send the funds to a pre-paid debit card.

Using Wampei WooCommerce Plugin

Feb 26, 2018. | By: Russell

WooCommerce is probably the easiest way to set up a storefront using Wordpress. It makes managing your business’s store and payments simple. Because so many of our customers choose to use WooCommerce it was the first third-party plugin that we provided. It’s slug is “woo-gateway-wampei-bitcoin.” It is available on github.

The plugin allows a store owner to leverage her Wampei Register© instance to accept Bitcoin payments as they would at the point of sale. You can also leverage plugins like woocommerce-payment-discounts to offer discounts for Bitcoin payments without a discount code.

Description

This plugin adds a Bitcoin payment method to your store. It requires that you have access to a Wampum Register© instance or white-labeled service that supports Wampei’s API. The plugin automatically converts the price from the currency you use to Bitcoin. Currently the plugin only supports ONE CURRENCY per store. The one that your Wampei Register© instance is configured to use. Using Euros or Yen or anything is ok, but the setting will apply to all payments through your store.

The beautiful thing about this plugin is that it integrates so nicely into your existing workflow. When the payment page is displayed, the system will send an email to the customer to make sure they can pay later if they don’t currently have enough bitcoin available in his/her wallet. You can also provide a link to the customer to purchase bitcoin from your favorite exchange or Bitcoin ATM.

A “cron” job checks the blockchain at 20-minute increments to see the status of the payment and sends the receipt to the customer and order notice to the store owner, assuming this is your standard workflow.

You can add the Bitcoin payment method to your store Settings configured in the WooCommerce Checkout Tab:

Title

Title of the payment method, typically “Wampei Bitcoin”

Customer Message

What you want your store to say as a thank you, e.g., “Thank you for purchasing with Bitcoin with Wampei Register©.”

Our New Name Wampei

Jan 22, 2018. | By: Russell

Its been a year since we started operating and it has been a wild ride. Four countries, twelve conferences, three accelerators, a new HQ. Now we have a new company name: Wampei Inc. It is pronounced Whom-Pay. If there were any Iriquois or other Native Americans that we offended, I apologize and hope that this is better. From our research there is no word Wampei in any Native American or other language.

We will be launching a new products and partnerships over the next two months, so stay tuned. We have set some pretty audacious goals for ourselves, but that is what you need when you want to change an industry.

Your Wampei Register Funding Address

Dec 12, 2017. | By: Russell

Your funding address

When you use Wampei Register© one of the things you have to determine is how and where you want to store your funds. Should you hold the crypto and send to a hardware or paper wallet? Perhaps you have business partners and want to send it to a Multi-sig wallet. Maybe you just want to spend it using a debit card. Most merchants choose to send funds to an exchange like Uphold.com or Coinbase.com where they can do whatever they want with the monies including convert it to their home currency and transferring it to a bank account.

Working with Uphold

Uphold

We recommend our new merchants use Uphold.com as their exchange because they are so easy to work with for businesses. Uphold has the concept of cards. Cards make organizing your funds much easier. You have an account (tied to your business) and one or more ‘cards’ which can hold national currencies or cryptocurrencies.

If you want your funds converted to a national currency immediately, you should create a new card in that currency (i.e., USD or EUR), give the card a name that makes sense and favorite the card to you see it on your dashboard. If you choose this option Uphold will buy the currency with the Bitcoin you send immediately and with the currency exchange rate.

To determine your funding address do the following:

  • Select your card of choice. In the image, I chose a USD card, but it could be any of your cards. Choose your card
  • Click “Add Funds” link in the upper righthand corner. Add Funds
  • Select “Fund with Cryptocurrency or Utility Token” Funding Options
  • Choose the cryptocurrency funding method - use Bitcoin (BTC). Choose BTC
  • Congratulations! You have your funding address You are done

Copy this address and submit this to your account contact at Wampum.

Working with Coinbase

Coinbase

Coinbase is one of the most popular cryptocurrency exchanges in the US and probably the world. They focus on the consumer’s experience, not someone who wants to trade all the time. One advantage to Coinbase for consumers is that they allow customers to purchase Bitcoin with a credit card and use it almost immediately. Most readers my posts are merchants; you’ll understand how important it is to a retail brick-and-mortar business that customers can purchase when they want to.

Once you have logged into Coinbase, to determine your funding address do the following:

  • Choose your BTC wallet.

Choose your wallet

  • Click through the BTC warning modal window. They do not want you to accidentally send other types of crypto to this address (like BCH) because you could lose those funds.

Confirm

  • Congratulations! You have your funding address You are done

Copy this address and submit this to your account contact at Wampum.

You are ready to go!

Cannabis dispensaries can accept electronic payments with Wampei Register©

Nov 20, 2017. | By: Russell

Denver, CO (November 21, 2017) - eCommerce problems have plagued cannabis companies. The problem is they do not have access to it. Even when they can find a state-licensed credit union like Partner, Numerica Credit Union and MAPS who will work with them, they cannot find a credit card processor and merchant bank to allow them to accept credit and debit cards. They still have to hire armed guards to protect the cash and schedule pickups from armored vehicles to deliver the cash to their credit union branch. Now, these un- and under-banked businesses have an electronic payment option which can decrease the amount of cash they have to handle.

Co-Founder Russell Castagnaro explains, “At Wampei, we believe that eCommerce technologies should be available to anyone doing legitimate business.  We help our customers leverage eCommerce technology with or without the use of a local bank.”

Wampei was a participant in the WebSummit ALPHA program which took place in Lisbon, Portugal as well as the TiE Rockies Propel business accelerator and Trout Tank pitch accelerator in Denver Colorado.

Castagnaro continues, “Today, less than 10% of retail purchases internationally are paid for electronically. Nearly 99% of all cannabis is purchased with cash. Why? A third party like a bank is required to pay electronically. Wampei Register© allows our customers to accept Bitcoin payments directly, without the use of a third party. Taking direct payments costs far less than credit cards, has no issues with fraud and eliminates returned payment risks. Leveraging eCommerce technology makes an enormous difference to the business’s bottom line and takes employees and the business itself out of harm’s way.”

Reasons to use Wampum

Nov 8, 2017. | By: Russell

Wampum Register© solves real cash management problems by allowing merchants to:

  • Accept cryptocurrency payments directly - with or without a bank
  • Reduce the cash on hand for retail outlets that need to be secured and transported
  • Provide pre-payment and online ordering options
  • Access funds on the day of the transaction
  • Pay employees, partners, vendors and other providers (who are not comfortable with large amounts of cash) electronically

Wampum Register© unravels the issues overlooked by existing solutions:

  • No Bank Accounts required for merchants or customers.
  • Customers can use any modern mobile cryptocurrency wallet app to pay, not just one app used for a few businesses.
  • Customers can fund their wallets quickly and easily from other people, Bitcoin ATMs or any cryptocurrency exchange in the world.
  • Because cryptocurrency is used instead of a proprietary transfer mechanism, merchants get their money the same day as payment.  That is better than a credit card or cashless ATMs, and far superior to the pre-paid value card networks.
  • Payments can be accepted online via existing eCommerce platforms or in the store at the point of purchase.

Wampum will help drive the newer, safer, fraudless eCommerce  of the future.

I only gave them two days. Our company name was different too, Wampum, but we eventually learned that we needed a name that we had no business choose that name ….

old logo

It was about time.
